Bumpers for VW T3: The perfect balance of aesthetics and expedition practicality

The core idea behind this project was to create a bumper that combines modern design with uncompromising functionality. We wanted a solution that does not touch the van's bodywork — unlike many original or custom-fabricated mounts, our design requires no drilling or modification to the vehicle's panels.

Why an external spare wheel carrier?

Every overlander's fundamental need is to move the spare wheel outside the vehicle. As is well known, a wheel on a 16'' rim (standard in expedition builds) simply does not fit in the factory underfloor space. Our bumper solves this problem by providing a secure and convenient location for the spare.

Evolution of the design: From Georgia to series production

The first prototype was built "on the fly" in 2007, a week before an expedition to Georgia. Although the construction — mounted on the original Syncro tow hitch — proved itself during two years of testing, we knew it needed refinement and a more professional approach.

The breakthrough came through our collaboration with Syncro4x4serwis. Drawing on shared experience and work on many unique VW T3 builds, we developed original solutions for problems that had previously been extremely labour-intensive and costly to solve. Our goals were simplicity, durability, and repeatability.

In 2020 the final design was completed. It:

• Is adapted for series production.
• Meets all rigorous technical requirements.
• Is refined in every detail.

Front bumper — stability and style

We worked on the front bumper in parallel. Like the rear, it had to integrate perfectly with the body lines while providing maximum strength. The original VW T3 front bumper is mounted at only two points — our design, given its size, gained additional support in the form of a central bolt. For the Syncro version, we also developed an integrated front bash plate, which complements the overall Syncro styling very well, along with a winch mount.

An important note for classic vehicle owners: all threads and mounting holes used by our bumpers are factory-present in all VW T3 models from 1979–1993. Installation is therefore fully reversible and safe for the vehicle's structure.
